The standby generator opportunity: building a backup-power line that pays

How independent electricians turn generator installs into a profitable, recurring revenue line: dealer relationships, sizing and load calcs, permit and gas and utility coordination, the maintenance-contract annuity, financing the ticket, and marketing to outage-prone areas.

Every extended outage (an ice storm, a hurricane, a wildfire-season public safety power shutoff, a grid that keeps getting less reliable) ends the same way for a chunk of homeowners: “never again.” That sentiment is the entire generator business. The demand is real, it is recurring, and unlike a lot of electrical work it comes with a built-in service annuity most electricians leave on the table. Done right, backup power is a high-ticket install plus a maintenance contract that pays you every year for the life of the unit.

Here is how to build it into a real line of business instead of a favor you do for a few good customers.

Know the three products you’re actually selling

“Generator” covers three very different jobs, and the money, the licensing overlap, and the sales conversation differ for each.

  • Whole-home standby. A permanently installed unit on a pad outside the house, wired to an automatic transfer switch, fueled by natural gas or propane, that starts itself within seconds of an outage and can run indefinitely. This is the premium ticket and the one with the recurring service. Major categories you’ll evaluate include the automatic air-cooled and liquid-cooled residential lines from the well-known standby manufacturers. Confirm the current model lineups and ratings directly with each manufacturer before you spec.
  • Portable + interlock or manual transfer. A far cheaper entry point: a code-compliant way to power essential circuits from a portable unit the homeowner already owns or buys, using a properly permitted interlock kit or a manual transfer switch and an inlet box. Lower ticket, but a legitimate, safe alternative to the deadly “suicide cord” backfeed, and a great foot in the door.
  • Battery backup. Increasingly part of the conversation, especially paired with solar. Different supply chain and often different training, but the same load-calc and transfer-switch fundamentals. Worth knowing so you can have an honest conversation rather than losing the customer to a solar company.

Tier these the way you tier everything else. See good-better-best proposals. A manual-transfer inlet is a real “good” option; an automatic standby on essential circuits is the “better”; whole-home standby is the “best.”

Get the dealer and certification relationships right

You generally cannot buy the leading standby brands like a box of wire. The manufacturers run dealer and installer programs, and access to equipment, warranty authority, factory training, and co-op marketing usually flows through those relationships. This is a feature, not a hassle: a manufacturer’s authorized-installer or dealer status is a moat that keeps the unlicensed handyman out of your market.

Do the homework before you commit:

  • Understand each manufacturer’s tiers. Programs typically distinguish between simply reselling/installing equipment and being a factory-certified service provider who can perform warranty work. The exact names, requirements, and benefits vary by brand and change over time. Confirm the current structure with each manufacturer’s channel or dealer program directly.
  • Weigh single-brand depth vs. multi-brand flexibility. Going deep with one line earns you better standing, training, and lead referrals; carrying more than one lets you fit more budgets. Pick based on your market, not a brochure.
  • Chase the warranty-service authorization. Being allowed to perform paid warranty repairs is a revenue line and it’s what makes your maintenance contract credible. Homeowners want the shop that can actually fix the unit, not just sell it.
  • Get the factory training and any required licensing sorted before you take the first deposit, and confirm what your state or province requires. See licensing and certification.

Master the sizing and load calculation

Sizing is where generator jobs are won or lost, and where an under-trained competitor creates callbacks you can avoid. A generator that’s too small nuisance-trips and browns out under motor-starting loads (that AC compressor, the well pump, the range); one that’s oversized wastes the customer’s money and yours.

There are two honest approaches, and the good conversation is about which the customer wants:

  • Essential-circuits (managed) coverage. Power the circuits that matter (furnace, fridge, well pump, a few outlets, maybe one AC) often with a load-management device that sheds or staggers big loads so a smaller, cheaper unit does the job. Lower ticket, very sellable.
  • Whole-home coverage. Size to run effectively everything, which usually means a larger, often liquid-cooled unit and a bigger fuel demand.

Do a real load calculation the same way you’d size a service: running loads plus the largest motor-starting load, per the adopted code. Don’t rule-of-thumb it off square footage. The sizing conversation is also your natural bridge to panel and service upgrades: an older or maxed-out panel frequently needs attention before a standby install makes sense, and that’s legitimate scope, not an upsell trick.

Coordinate the permit, the gas, and the utility, before you dig

A standby install touches more trades and agencies than almost any residential electrical job, and the ones who lose money are the ones who under-scope the coordination.

  • Permit every time. Standby installs are inspected work: electrical for sure, often mechanical/gas and sometimes building for the pad and setbacks. Build the permit and inspection time into the quote.
  • Handle the fuel honestly. Natural gas or propane sizing and connection is its own discipline with its own licensing in most jurisdictions. If you’re not licensed for gas work, line up a relationship with a plumber or gas fitter and price it into the job rather than winging it. Undersized gas supply is a classic reason a correctly sized generator still underperforms. In the US, gas licensing varies by state and locality; in Canada, gas work is separately regulated (for example TSSA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC), so confirm who’s allowed to make the connection before you schedule.
  • Watch clearances and placement. Manufacturer clearances from windows, doors, and the meter, plus exhaust direction and noise ordinances, drive where the unit can legally sit. Confirm the specifics against the current manufacturer manual and local rules.
  • Loop in the utility where required. Some jurisdictions and utilities have notification or interconnection expectations, particularly as battery and solar get involved. Check before you energize.

The maintenance contract is the real prize

Here’s what separates a generator business from a generator sale: the annuity. A standby unit is a small engine sitting outside in the weather, and it needs to run when it’s needed most. That means periodic service: oil and filter changes, battery checks, load-bank or exercise verification, control and transfer-switch checks. Manufacturers publish maintenance intervals; follow theirs.

Sell the maintenance plan with the install, not after:

  • Attach it at the close. “The install includes your first year of service; after that it’s an annual plan that keeps the warranty valid and the unit ready.” Confirm each manufacturer’s actual warranty-maintenance requirements and reflect them accurately.
  • It builds a recurring-revenue book that’s far more valuable than one-off service calls: predictable, schedulable in your slow season, and a reason to stay in front of the customer.
  • It feeds the next sale. The tech doing the annual service is standing next to the panel, the EV charger opportunity, and the aging service. Maintenance visits are lead sources.
  • It reduces callbacks and warranty pain because you catch the dead battery in spring instead of during the storm. Fewer emergency “it didn’t start” calls protects your reputation, the thing the whole business runs on. (More on that in cutting callbacks.)

Route maintenance visits into your dispatch and scheduling system so the annuity actually gets serviced and doesn’t quietly lapse.

Finance the ticket

A whole-home standby install is a five-figure decision for many homeowners, and price is the number-one reason a hot “never again” lead goes cold. Present every proposal as a monthly payment alongside the total, the same move that works on panels and EV chargers. Quote real, current terms from your actual lender. Never invent a rate or a payment.

Market to the moment and the map

Generator demand is event-driven and geographic, which makes marketing unusually targetable.

  • Own the outage-prone areas. Rural properties on wells, neighborhoods with overhead lines and lots of trees, regions with hurricane, ice-storm, or wildfire-shutoff exposure. These are your best territories. Concentrate there.
  • Be ready before the storm and present after it. Demand spikes right after a major outage and again heading into a known storm or wildfire season. Have the capacity, the financing, and the follow-up ready so you’re not scrambling when the phone rings. Watch the news feed for the events that move demand.
  • Lead with reliability and safety, not specs. Homeowners buy “your fridge and furnace and well pump keep running, automatically, when the grid goes down,” not engine displacement. And make the safety case against backfeeding a portable through a dryer outlet. It kills lineworkers and it’s the honest reason to do it right.
  • Use your local presence. Reviews, Google Business Profile, and neighborhood targeting all compound here. See marketing beyond Google. One well-serviced standby on a block tends to sell the next one.

Rollout checklist

  • Choose your manufacturer relationship(s) and complete the dealer/installer and factory-training requirements. Confirm current program tiers and warranty-service authorization directly with the manufacturer.
  • Sort out gas licensing or a gas-fitter partner, and your permit/inspection process, before the first sale.
  • Build a repeatable load-calc worksheet for essential-circuit vs. whole-home sizing.
  • Package good-better-best tiers (manual inlet / essential-circuit standby / whole-home) with a monthly financing figure on each.
  • Write the maintenance plan and attach it to every install at the close.
  • Get maintenance visits into dispatch so the annuity is scheduled, not forgotten.
  • Target marketing to your outage-prone territories and set up storm-season follow-up.

The bottom line

The generator opportunity isn’t just a bigger ticket. It’s the rare electrical line that sells itself when the lights go out, layers a service annuity on top of the install, and feeds every other job you do. Get the dealer relationship, the sizing, and the gas-and-permit coordination right, attach the maintenance contract at the close, finance the ticket, and market to the map. Do that and backup power becomes one of the most durable, most profitable corners of your business.
